Silk Terms
Bale(Silk) - A defined quantity of raw silk carefully wrapped in
a cotton cloth and gunny cloth. A Japanese or Shanghai bale contains
60 kg. (picul) or European bale 100 kg. and a Canton bale 48 kg. of
raw silk. Indian bale is occasionally 20 kg.
Basine – A silk fabric in which two sets of fine warps float
over every two fillings and interlace with the third.
Bave - The bifilar thread spun by the silk worm; it consists
of two filaments (brins) that are cemented together by the gum or
sericin.
Bertin Silk – A type of cordonnet or crocheting silk made by
twisting 4 to 8 single yarns with a right hand twist and then
twisting 3 of these with a left hand twist. The yarn is high twist
and therefore round, smooth and hard.
Bivoltine – Cocoons built by a silkworm race with two
generations (life cycles) in a year.
